Often referred to as "the sexting app", Snapchat is trying to gain public trust and evolve itself into something bigger and better, though caution is still advised.
Snapchat is continuing to become a viable platform for all sorts of entertainment, from the news to quizzes to full-length shows. So it should come as no surprise that Disney has announced that it will be bringing new original shows to Snapchat in a deal that was announced on Wednesday.
Disney isn’t the only company partnering with Snapchat, as groups like Viacom, NBCUniversal, and Turner Broadcasting System have joined the jamboree to bring in younger users. There’s no telling what kind of original content Disney will be creating for the app, but there’s a lot of potential there for shorter content to keep viewers engaged. And we’re talking a whole lot of silly clickbait too, I’m sure, with gifs and accompanying Vines, but that comes with the territory.
There’s a larger and larger subset of those who devour media content on apps like Snapchat who prefer to skip out on regular television programming entirely, hooking them with bite-sized pieces of content and hoping to keep their interest piqued on social media networks.
Although don’t get too excited just yet thinking your favorite Disney movies are going to come to Snapchat or anything like that. This will likely be a new crop of Disney stars aimed at tweens and younger teenagers, so if you’re not the target audience you may be disappointed. There’s still plenty of content on the way for the app, so it’s interesting to see this kind of platform and how it shakes out. It will no doubt be an important part of the way users consume media going forward, like it or not.
If you were in charge of planning this type of content for Disney, what kind of shows would you schedule for users? Are you ready for Snapchat to further its revolution?
